Goodreads synopsis:
Billionaire celebrity chef Christopher Denton is back in his hometown, hoping to win a local baking contest and gain some much-needed publicity before launching his new show. The only possible glitch in the plan is knowing Mara Lancaster, the girl who broke his heart back in high school, is his competition. Though his pulse is racing in that old familiar way, he plays it cool, not wanting Mara to know how much seeing her has affected him. Maybe if he acts like he doesn’t care, his traitorous heart will listen. But as the competition heats up, so do his thoughts about her. Mara’s even more gorgeous now and he’s finding it difficult to keep his eyes—and his hands—off her.
Mara has to win the Christmas gingerbread house competition. This isn’t a game to her: it’s her entire future, because she needs the prize money to start her own bakery. Nothing will get in the way of that dream. Certainly not an egotistical, bad boy billionaire chef, even if he makes her blood sizzle and her mind turn to cookie batter—just like he did when they were teenagers. She can’t deny their attraction, though, and the more time they spend together, the more Mara sees the boy she loved before accidentally breaking his heart. And she likes what she sees. Chris is kind and really a bit of a softy, despite his hard exterior.
But just when Mara thinks things between her and Chris might end sweetly, her ex shows up on the scene and leaves Mara wondering if it will all crumble—just like a gingerbread house…
4.5 stars!
Great Foodie Hate to Love Romance
with a unique Christmas setting.
Sparks between these two about blind you!
This is the third book in the Denton Billionaire's series by Leslie North.
I thought this book was really unique. It is set at Christmas which always gives us all the feels. Then there is this hate to love story that just keeps you guessing until the very end. Chris felt like he had been betrayed by Mara back in high school by kissing Dan. But he never bothered to get the whole story and thus spent many fruitless years grieving over the loss of their relationship. Now they are thrown back together for a Christmas baking contest. Chris is now a hugely popular celebrity chef and Mara just wants to open her own bakery. The biggest problem these two have is communication. If they had both tried to speak to the other at least for a second, most of this drama would have been taken off the table.
When they started getting together romantically, wow, what sparks. But I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. I knew there had to be more drama in store for me. I even contemplated for a hot minute whether Chris would play Mara just to get back at her. I always enjoy Leslie North's romances. This author can really capture the feelings of his characters and makes the most of the differences between them.
Great book. I will definitely be reading more from Leslie North. If you love a good romance book, definitely check this one out. You won't be disappointed.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
