Villain (Hero #1.5) by Samantha Young

Villain

200 pages
Published December 5th 2017

Goodreads synopsis:
The sexy and emotional companion novella to the New York Times bestselling romance Hero.

Nadia Ray is not just a broadcast meteorologist. She’s Boston’s morning television It Girl. Successful and independent, she’s put a past she’s ashamed of behind her and is forging a future she can be proud of. However, when her new boss discovers her secret he blackmails her, intent on using Nadia’s popularity to make them the number one morning show in Massachusetts. He wants her to be part of uncovering the city’s biggest scandal - a secret billionaire Caine Carraway is hiding.

Soon Nadia is thrown into the path of Caine’s best friend: sexy, wealthy bachelor Henry Lexington. But she doesn’t encounter the dashing high society gentleman Henry is purported to be. Instead she’s faced with an insulting and defensive villain who misjudges her at every turn.

When Henry finally realizes the truth, and decides to make amends, Nadia wants nothing to do with him. But she underestimates his determination and charm and soon they find themselves embroiled in an intense, passionate affair.

An affair Nadia knows must come to an end before their feelings grow any deeper and he discovers her secrets.

After all, Henry Lexington isn’t the only one who played the part of a villain once…

4.5 Stars

This is the second book in the Hero series by Samatha Young. Yet she has labeled this title as book 1.5. I wonder if that is because it is 200 pages shorter than book one and thus she believes it to be a novella. This one stood great paired with the 400 page HERO. I would have called it book two.

What a great followup to the first book in the series. I am not exactly what makes Nadia Ray a VILLAIN like the title suggests. Some people are just so hard on themselves with the labels.

I really enjoyed digging deeper into who Henry Lexington really was behind the charm and wealthy facade. A lot of this book reworked ground already covered in book one yet just told from the perspective of Nadia and Henry. It was cool to see this new perspective. A lot of this did not come out in book one. I am sure if Caine knew that Nadia had discovered his deep dark secret, it would have been all over for the broadcast meteorologist.

Nadia’s boss Dick (what an appropriate name, by the way) saw her as the cheesy pin-up girl that he could manipulate like a legal prostitute on television to get the ratings increase he sought. And when they brought the Toilet Paper King aka “Asswipe” into the picture, I realized why he had shown up in book one… for this exact scene trying to humiliate Nadia into being Dick’s puppet.

I had to really give it to Henry for taking the initiative and confronting Nadia Ray from the very beginning when he realized she may be digging into Caine’s past and trying to out him in the press. All the misunderstandings and unsaid words really ramped up the tension. I am always amazed when authors can get under our skin so effectively.

I was extremely satisfied with this book and am looking and hoping the author will bring another into the series. In the meantime, I am sure I will check out the vast range of her other works. She is an author I will definitely keep an eye on. Going onto my must read list, pronto!
